The discipline of software engineering concerns the development, quality assurance and maintenance of software and software-intensive products. Over the last few decades, the rapid digitalization of nearly every aspect of modern society has put a large emphasis on the development of methods, techniques and tools for efficient and effective software engineering. This emphasis has naturally also affected the direction of research in software engineering. Moreover, as economic growth to a large extent relies on technical progression, innovation has become an inevitable goal for many software engineering research funding agencies. This presentation will raise some issues related to the focus on innovation in software engineering research. Specifically, it will question why the development of new techniques is often considered inherently more valuable than the understanding of existing ones.
BIO: Daniel Sundmark shares his time between SICS and Mälardalen University, where he serves as a senior lecturer and leader of the SoftwareTesting Laboratory. His research focuses on empirical studies of industrialsoftware development and methods for software quality assurance. He is particularly interested in different aspects of software testing, includingregression testing, coverage metrics, and the effectiveness of different testing techniques. Daniel received a MSc degree (civilingenjör) in Information Technology from Uppsala University in 2003, a licenciate degreefrom Mälardalen University in 2004, and a PhD degree from Mälardalen University in 2008. His talk will also cover a few reflections on life and career after a PhD and things that might be worth considering even during the PhD studies.
