Three trends provide the context for the scientific work in READY. (1) Media distribution applications are increasingly dominating the volume of network traffic. Some media applications require low latency, and some cause problems for other applications. (2) A growing number of networked devices as part of the "Internet of Things", including distributed control and industrial applications with strict latency needs. (3) Cloud-based services is a paradigm shift in how services are provisioned and how computers and networks are used, and require low latency for a good user experience.
