Dependability Assurance in Safety Critical Systems

Publication Type:

Keynote Lecture

Venue:

International Conference on Embedded Systems 2014

Abstract

Embedded systems are in the forefront of technological innovations supporting most industries as well as bringing new solutions for improving the quality of our lives. The spectrum of applications and proliferation of embedded systems is ever increasing and they bring forth a huge set opportunities as well as associated challenges. Due to the safety/mission critical nature of many of these applications, a main challenge is how to provide adequate guarantees regarding some of the crucial properties such as safety and timeliness. These are often mandated by several of the safety standards and compliance to them is becoming a legal requirement in many industrial domains. This talk presents some of the key challenges in the dependability assurance of embedded systems. The current research trends in addressing some of the dependability challenges, specifically the component-based approaches towards development and certification are also highlighted.
