Abstract

An investigation has been done to see if one can motivate introducing priorities in the type of service field of the IP-packets. A simple network consisted of four nodes was chosen as a real-world scenario, and simulated in ns-2. The scenario consisted of a network of two sending nodes that are sending IP-packets to a receiving node, through a router node having different queuing techniques. The sending nodes were a FTP-server using TCP/IP, with a long delay time, and a UDP/IP sending an MPEG-stream. The intention of this scenario was to see if one could have a decent picture quality, and at the same time not interfere with the FTP-stream. The Fair Queuing technique outperformed the other two queuing techniques when it comes to allocating sufficient bandwidth to both sources. We assume that the picture quality can be increased if priorities are introduced in the UDP packets containing the MPEG pictures. We propose a simple algorithm that can be used to select UDP packets containing pictures that are crucial for overall picture quality. As a result the picture quality can be increased while preserving the bandwidth requirements.
